I think economic strength gives power. Power gives you the ability to control the narrative. However economic power does not guarantee happiness. There are many small nations on the planet that have very happy citizens who maybe don't have a lot of money.
In the case of Western Europe, much prosperity came, but only at the expense of slave labor, colonies etc..I believe economic success is important, but it doesn't solely determine a nation's greatness. True greatness comes from a balance of economic prosperity, social justice, education, healthcare, and the well-being of its people. Compassion and progress matter just as much.
